How to set up MikuMikuOnline

1. Changing the locale

First of all, make sure you're using a Windows system and your computer's locale is set to Japanese. If you're an UTAU user, chances are your locale is already set to Japanese. Otherwise, watch this quick tutorial. This step is very important, as the game's data gets corrupted on computers which have their locale set to anything other than Japanese, causing crashes and bugs.

2. Installing the client

Once your locale is set to Japanese, download the client off the Download page. As mentioned in the previous step, it is very, very important that your locale is already in Japanese before running any .exe files.

We offer a modified version of the client which comes with a large amount of skins for your character, important tools such as MMOExChat (external chat window) and RemoteMMOChat (external chatlog), and an English translation.

3. Joining the server

Open MMO by double clicking the client_wss-mod_beta21_64.exe file in your MMO folder. If you're on a 32-bit system use client_wss-mod_beta21.exe instead. You will be greeted by some japanese text on a green background and a small white box with numbers on it. Replace the numbers with our server ip: mmo.39chan.moe.

(NOTE: PMX MODELS WILL NOT WORK ON 32-BIT SYSTEMS)

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is my game crashing?
If you ignored the first step in our guide, chances are your game is corrupted. Your computer's locale must be set to Japanese before you install the client, otherwise expect crashes. Other potential crashes could be caused by players changing their model or a game controller being plugged in.
  • Why are people not seeing my skin?
Make sure that the other players are running the latest version of our client, which by default includes more skins than the original version. If you've manually installed a new skin yourself, other people will also have to download it in order to see it.
  • How do I install my own skin?
To install a skin simply download your MMD model of choice, create a folder for it in models > キャラクター and create an info.json file that includes the character's name, height and animations. If you need examples, all of the characters have info files which you can use as a base. Make sure that there's only one PMX/PMD file in the folder, otherwise the game will attempt to load all of the models at once. If other people don't see your skin, they will have to install it manually.
  • How do I change my resolution?
If your MikuMikuOnline window is too big/small you can change the resolution by opening the config.json file in your MMO folder and changing the values of screen_width and screen_height. For small screens we recommend 1280x600. Similarly, this config can be used to enable or disable anti-aliasing.
